Artemisa Province is a new Cuban province established from January 1, 2011, after the division of the former province of Havana on current Artemisa and Mayabeque. The capital is the city of Artemisa, which was the largest municipality in area and population of the former province of Havana (1976-2010). The economy of the area is mainly agricultural and industrial in the sector of the construction materials industry with two cement factories (located in Mariel city and Artemisa city) of the 6 existing in the country. The main port is Mariel, one of the largest in the country, whose expansion with the construction of a container terminal for large vessels, was inaugurated in January 2014, as part of a special economic zone developed by the Cuban government with investment from Brazil.
